The Three Sisters

The Three Sisters Method (of planting)

I stumbled across this planting method during a visit to my local nursery (NOT a big box store, but I will save that rant for another post) and I immediately thought of sharing it here on this blog. Though I certainly have the space, this method promises to be a space saver, so it would be perfect for those of you that don't have that much room. So give it a try and make sure you check back and let me know how it went.

The name 'Three Sisters' comes from the tradition of planting corn, beans and squash as 3 interconnected plants that grow and thrive together. For best results, find a spot that gets full sun. You will need a mound of soil about 1'x2' and each mound should be separated by about 4 feet.

In each mound, place 4-6 corn seeds. When those sprout, plant a second circle of green beans about 6 inches away from the corn. A few days later, plant squash seeds in a circle around the beans.

Make sure you stay on top of the weeds and thin out all but the sturdiest of each plant. The beans should climb the corn and the squash sends out runner leaves which act as a mulch to keep moisture in.
